Vocabulary learning is the basic element in English learning.The Vocab teaching also plays an important role in English teaching.The National English Curriculum Standard advocates that the second level target should be achieved at the end of primary school.According to the language knowledge objectives,“Primary school students should know that words are composed of letters,and they should master 600-700 words and about 50 phrases.They should also be capable of using 400 words and spelling out them according to the pronunciation rules”.However,there are many problems such as rote learning,difficulty in reading and spelling in vocabulary learning process.Phonics is the method of high discussion in recent years.It can cultivate students’ ability of reading and spelling words by establishing correspondence among letters,letter combinations and sounds.This thesis explores the effectiveness of phonics in English vocabulary teaching based on the experimental research method.The study objects who from the grade five in Dali Experimental Primary School are divided into Experimental Class and Control Class.There are 60 students in each class.By using questionnaires,test and interview,the paper is mainly focused on the following issues:(1)Can phonics improve pupils’ ability of word spelling and pronunciation?(2)Can phonics stimulate the interest of pupils in English vocabulary learning?Before the experiment,the interview and questionnaires are used to know the current situation and attitude of vocabulary learning.The pre-test was used to find out whether there were significant differences between the Experimental Class and Control Class.In the course of the experiment,phonics was carried out in experimental class while the normal mode was maintained in control class.After 10 weeks experiment,the writer analyzed the influence of phonics on students’ reading and spelling ability by combining questionnaires,interview and test results.The experiment class has made great progress in words reading and spelling according to the analysis.Also,their interests in word learning has been stimulated,they have a stronger will to spell new words by themselves.Therefore,this thesis concludes that phonics can effectively improve primary school students’ interest and spelling ability in English vocabulary learning.
