A Practice Report On Simulated Simultaneous Interpreting Of TV Interview Program Journey Of Civilization About Chinese Dietary Culture

The necessity of food makes it one of the most popular topics that people are glad to take about.China,as a country with vast territory and abundant resources,is famous for its diverse food traditions and cultures that inspire the curiosity of foreign people.The necessity of introducing Chinese dietary culture to foreigners is self-evident.Therefore,two episodes of TV interview about dietary culture are selected from Journey of Civilization to interpret.It is one of the most typical TV interview programs held by the channel of CCTV4.And compared with programs like TV series,movies,news and documentaries,interviews are more authentic and interactive,which can help the audience to know Chinese stories and understand Chinese culture in a more relaxing state.Interview interpreting is a unique form of media interpreting,which is closely related to modern life and regarded as an important way for people to know different cultures of the other countries.However,in different occasions,the interpreting process of the interview may be affected by its content,audience,time and so on,which may then influence the effects and functions of the interpreting.Interview programs usually show strong randomness and immediacy,and the dialogue between the interviewer and interviewees is often featured with loose sentences,unclear logic,redundant information,vague semantics and so on.And about Chinese diet,China owns vast territory and abundant resources that form its diverse cooking traditions and cultures.And for the sake of keeping healthy,some medicines are often cooked together with food by many people.Therefore,many unique Chinese expressions and medicine terms are encountered by the interpreter during the process of interpreting.All these problems bring great challenge to the interpreter.To solve those problems,in the simulated simultaneous interpreting practice of the two episodes of interview program about Chinese dietary culture,the author sorts out the difficulties and proposes corresponding strategies to solve them,so as to provide a high-quality interpreting for the audience.Christina Nord,a German translation theorist of functionalism school,put forward"functionality plus loyalty" theory.According to her,translation and interpreting studies cannot be separated from linguistic knowledge,and they should pay more attention to pragmatic analysis,that is,translation and interpreting studies need to be analyzed according to people’s behavior,their daily communication environment and various cultural factors etc.What is more,the purposes and intentions of all participants in the communication activities should be carefully considered.And interview is a typical communication activity with obvious purposes and intentions.Hence,to solve the problems in the process of interpreting,the author carries out the simulated simultaneous interpreting practice under the guidance of "functionality plus loyalty"theory.To ensure the validity and reliability of the assessment,the author adopts both quantitative assessment and qualitative assessment in her thesis.On the on hand,she collects the feedback of the scale and processes the data which shows audience’s acceptability to her interpreting;on the other hand,she has the semi-structured interview with several professors to ensure the interpreting quality and discuss the interpreting strategies,making her practice more reliable.In the end,she sums up the interpreting strategies like literal interpreting,free interpreting,transliteration plus interpretation,simplification,supplementation,reorganization,anticipation and conversion.It is hoped that this practice can serve as a valuable reference for the study of interview programs interpreting and the interpreting of Chinese dietary culture.
