| Yu Mi is one of Bi Feiyu’s masterpieces. The work shows all aspects of life in the northern part of Jiangsu Province during and after the Great Cultural Revolution.Bi Feiyu uses a large quantity of foregrounded language, which is an important embodiment of the literariness of the work.Whether the foregrounded language will be reproduced in the process of translation relates to the transmission of the literariness of the works.Leech classified foregrounding into paradigmatic foregrounding and syntagmatic foregrounding, the former contains eight types of deviation and the latter includes the parallelism at phonological level and grammatical level.Based on this, the present author takes Leech’s foregrounding theory as the guidance, and analyzes how Goldblatts’ translation reproduces the foregrounded effect of the original text from the aspects of paradigmatic foregrounding and syntagmatic foregrounding. The present author will explore the following questions:1.What are the types of foregrounded language in Yu Mi?What are the functions of foregrounded language?2.How did the translators translate the language featuring paradigmatic foregrounding? What are the effects?3.How did the translators translate the language featuring syntagmatic foregrounding? What are the effects?Through quantitative analysis and qualitative analysis, the present author finds that there are six kinds of language featuring deviation and the parallelism on phonological level and grammatical level in Yu Mi,which plays an important role in shaping of characters, highlighting the theme, promoting the expressiveness and novelty of the language and giving the readers’ aesthetic enjoyment. The present author selects three typical deviations, namely semantic deviation, dialectal deviation and the deviation of register,as well as the parallelism on phonological, lexical and syntactic levels as the study object. The present author finds that the translators tend to take the literal translation as major translation method and other multiple translation methods as secondary methods in the process of translating foregrounded language. In Three Sisters, the foregrounded effects of semantic deviation and the deviation of register are reproduced to a large extent;since the translators tend to use standardized language to translate dialect, the foregrounded effects produced by the dialectal deviation in the source text is greatly lost in the target text;and in the process of translating the parallelism on phonological, lexical and syntactic level, the translators tend to replace or omit the parallelism in the original text to make the translation conform to the expressing habits of the target language, but the foregrounded effect is to some extent weakened. |
