Literary Englands:Versions of "Englishness" in Modern Writing is a literary critical text written in English. The translator chooses chapter 6 "Englands within England:Waugh and Orwell" and a part of Chapter 7 "Larkin,Betjeman and the aftermath of ’England’" as the translation material, which analyze four writers:two novelists,Waugh and Orwell, and two poets,Larkin and Betjeman, and discuss the characters and plots in their works. The source text author shows that writers of 1930s have been influenced by the long-established,complex and sophisticated literary tradition and that nostalgia lays at the heart of England’s culture at that time. This text involves a lot of information about literature in England,in which many writers, works, famous figures in England history, plots, religion as well as some important events in England history are manifested. It has strong literary value and reference significance. The source text is characterized by strong literariness, vague meanings, long and complex sentence patterns, many quotations and loose textual connections, which is of great significance to the translator’s translation practice. This translation report is divided into five parts. The first chapter describes the background for the selection of the text, makes an analysis of the source text, including content analysis and language analysis, and mentions the significance of this research. The second chapter gives a sketch of the whole translation process.Chapter three elaborates on Polysystem Theory, which is the guiding theory used in this translation practice.Chapter four is the main part of the translation practice report. In the inspiration of Polysystem Theory, the translator conducts this translation practice under the guidance of the principles of "adequacy" and"acceptability",and chooses some skills and methods such as explicitation, transliteration, annotation.Chapter five is a summary of the translator’s experience and shortcomings. The writing of this translation practice report has given the translator a deep understanding of the characteristics of literary criticism texts and she hopes to provide some reference for the translators who later translate such type of texts.
