Chinese cultural "going global" initiative has raised the standards for the dissemination of our culture in foreign countries. Not only should cross-cultural communication allow the target readers to understand the implications carried by Chinese culture,it is also supposed to allow them to appreciate the charm exhibited by our culture and take the initiative to explore and learn it.Over the course of cross-cultural communication, the dissemination of literary works plays a major role.Culture-loaded words in literary works, which are unique vocabulary distinct from other countries, are the crucial windows for the spread of culture. In definition,culture-loaded words are the words, phrases and idioms which are unique to a particular culture. These words are reflective of the distinctive pattern of activity that is slowly accumulated over a long historical period and distinct from other countries. In the process of communication made between two different cultures,it is a tough challenge for the target readers to appreciate the ideological implication of the original author’s works as well as the readers of the source language because of the disparities in cultural background, customs, religious beliefs, geographical conditions and a variety of other factors between two languages.Culture-loaded words,as a sort of words with diverse national and regional features, their translation plays an extremely significant role in the cultural communication made with the outside world. Therefore, their translation is the core part of the translation of literary works and plays a crucial role in spreading the Chinese culture to other countries.Mo Yan’s works are filled with local features and customs, and contain plenty of culture-loaded words. Therefore, the author selects Mo Yan’s Hanging Scroll as the research text to investigate the translation strategy applied for its culture-loaded words. The core of the Skopos Theory is that the translation objective determines the translation strategies and methods. This study is purposed to "introduce Chinese literature to target readers, enable them to comprehend the unique charm of Chinese culture and promote cross-cultural communication".In the meantime, the author,in order to achieve the purpose, adheres to the three rules of Skopos, coherence and fidelity of the Skopos Theory and applies various translation strategies of omission, amplification, substitution, subtraction, free translation, annotation, transliteration plus annotation and literal translation over the course of translating culture-loaded words. In this thesis, the Skopos Theory will be applied to study the strategies used to translate the culture-loaded words in Mo Yan’s Hanging Scroll. It is comprised of six chapters.Chapter One explains why the author chooses this topic.Chapter Two reviews the literature in relation to the Skopos Theory,culture-loaded words and Mo Yan’s works.Chapter Three elaborates on the development of the Skopos Theory and significance of the Skopos Theory in culture-loaded words.Chapter Four, the source text is analyzed. As the critical chapter of this thesis,Chapter Five focuses on an analysis of the translation strategies of culture-loaded words in the source text.Chapter Six presents a summary of the research. This thesis is aimed at identifying the appropriate translation strategies for culture-loaded words through the guidance of the Skopos Theory so as to facilitate the Chinese culture to go global more smoothly.
