In 2011,the "English Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education" added the humanism feature in addition to the instrumentality of English courses,that is,English courses should also improve students’ humanities."The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools(2017)" proposed that the core task of the English curriculum is to explore the meaning of the theme.It can be seen that the ultimate goal of the teaching concept of thematic meaning is to promote the development of students’ key competence,which has important theoretical and guiding significance not only for middle schools,but also for the design and implementation of English teaching in primary schools.In order to investigate and analyze the current situation of English reading teaching in the primary school high section in the field of thematic meaning,to guide the teaching practice of first-line primary school English teachers,and to promote the development of students’ key competence,this study aims to answer the following questions:(1)What are the problems in exploring the thematic meaning in the teaching of English reading in the primary schools high section?(2)What are the causes of these problems?(3)How can teachers guide students to explore thematic meaning in English reading teaching better? Based on the above problems,this paper is based on constructivism conception of learning and Whole Language Approach,selects the senior students of the G Primary School as the survey object,and supplements the data through teacher interviews and classroom observations.As a result,there are following problems:(1)teachers ignore the exploration of the thematic meaning;(2)teachers lack in-depth interpretation of the text;(3)the design of teaching activities deviates from the thematic context;(4)teachers have insufficient training in thinking ability;(5)students lack active construction of the thematic meaning.In response to these problems,the following strategies are proposed to provide a reference for teachers to guide students to explore the thematic meaning in reading:(1)teachers should strengthen the theoretical study of the thematic meaning and promote the conversion of theory into practice;(2)teachers should read text in depth and dig the thematic meaning;(3)teachers should design teaching activities based on the thematic context;(4)teachers should ask in-depth questions,focusing on the exploration of the thematic meaning;(5)teachers should encourage students to explore the thematic meaning independently and actively.
