Verbal humor is widely seen in daily communication,which is favored by people.Verbal humor is the main carrier of cross talk.A pragmatic analysis of the humor language in cross talk is of great significance for understanding the punchlines and cross talk culture.The studies of verbal humor at home and abroad are involved in various fields,such as philosophy,linguistics,psychology,literature and the like.Guo Degang is one of the most popular and successful cross talk performers in China currently,However,relatively few studies on Guo Degang’s cross talk have been conducted from a linguistic perspective.Meanwhile,his cross talk is characterized with simple language that is easy to understand,vivid contents as well as flexible forms,which bring endless laughter and joy to audience.Therefore,this study takes Guo Degang’s cross talk works as research materials.The researcher listens to and watches the relevant audios and videos to collect,sort out and select the appropriate verbal humor fragments as the research corpus.Through the combination of quantitative and qualitative methods,the study draws on cooperation principle and relevance theory as the theoretical framework with discourse analysis method adopted to analyze and explain the process and strategy of generating verbal humor in these fragments.This article focuses on the following three questions:(1)How does Guo Degang’s cross talk violate cooperative principle to generate verbal humor?(2)What is the generation process of verbal humor in Guo Degang’s cross talk based on relevance theory?(3)How can features of cooperative principle and relevance theory be integrated to further analyze the generation of verbal humor in Guo Degang’s cross talk?The study shows that firstly,the violations of cooperation principle can be used to explain and analyze the causes of verbal humor,which strengthens the in-depth understanding of humorous language.Secondly,relevance theory can be used to deeply analyze the cognitive psychological process of verbal humor and explains how the audience are conscious of the gap between maximal relevance and optimal relevance,and then to improve their taste of understanding cross talk verbal humor.Thirdly,it is capable to have a more comprehensive and deep appreciation of the verbal humor in the cross talk by integrating the features of cooperative principle with relevance theory.Finally,this article puts forward some meaningful suggestions and references for future related research.
