E-C Translation Report Of A Popular Science Text Under The Guidance Of Nord’s Functionalist Approach

With the advancement of science and technology and the development of economic globalization,big data has penetrated into various fields and is closely connected with people’s daily life.In order to deepen people’s understanding of big data and reveal the data security problems that need to be faced in the era of big data,an increasing number of researchers begin to join the research on big data and data security,and study big data from various dimensions.This translation project is excerpted from an IEEE XPlore article titled Google Deep Mind and Healthcare in an Age of Algorithms.This article mainly discloses the problems Deepmind encountered in the data cooperation with the Royal Free hospital in the UK,and seek solutions to the data security problems through the discussion of these problems.This report first introduces the background of the translation project,and makes an accurate translation plan according to the length and difficulty of the source text.This article has many characteristics such as containing numerous polysemous words,long and complicated sentences,passive sentences and possessing high expertise.This fact has posed a challenge to the author,in the translation project,to ensure technical accuracy and information intactness as well as follow the targeted context based on translating the source text properly.Therefore,in this report,the author identifies Nord’s functional translation theory as guiding theories.The theory part introduces the historical background of Nord’s functional translation theory and introduces the two guiding principles applied in this translation report,and analyzes the reasons why the theory is applicable to this report.Theauthor has refined the source text analysis principle and the function plus loyal translation principles to ensure that they run through translation practice.The language characteristics of scientific and technological texts are distinct.In this report,the author translates the source text at three levels under the guidance of Nord’s functional translation theory:lexical and syntactic,as well as textual level,and takes translation approaches applicable to the source text type.The author hopes that this translation practice will help him(or her)deepen his(or her)understanding of Nord’s functional theory and scientific and technological texts,enabling him(or her)to flexibly apply the translation theory to translation,and at the same time bring benefit to other translators.
