| Metaphor is ubiquitous in language. It is not only a rhetorical device, but also a basic cognitive mode of human beings. In recent years, with the rapid development of modern information technology and interdisciplinary research, the study of metaphor breaks through the limitation of a single text mode, and gradually combines audio, video, image and other modes to construct the concept of metaphor with multiple senses and reveal its cognitive nature.Multimodal Metaphor is written by Charles J.Forceville based on many years of research on metaphor. It discusses the types, functions and effects of multimodal metaphor on human life from an interdisciplinary perspective. This book provides a new direction for the study of multimodal metaphor, which is of great significance to the development of metaphor theory and applied research. This paper is based on the translation of the first and second chapters of the scientific text Multimodal Metaphor.Scientific texts usually involve a lot of theoretical knowledge and professional terms, and their contents are difficult to understand. Therefore, the readability of the translation is very important, which also brings great challenges to the translator. The translator must comprehend and understand the source text very well on the basis of certain professional background knowledge, and build clear logical form and accurate Chinese expression,so as to take into account the accuracy and readability of scientific text translation.Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory has exerted a great influence on practice of translation.According to this theory, during the process of translation, the translator not only needs to put emphasis on word-to-word equivalence,sentence-to-sentence equivalence, but also semantic equivalence. This provides an effective theoretical guidance for the translation of metaphor-related scientific text.Taking the theory of functional equivalence as the guiding principle, the translator translates the book with the goal of improving the readability of the translation. In the process of translation, the translator focuses on both lexical equivalence and semantic equivalence. When translating professional words or acronyms about metaphor, the translator tries to translate them fully. When translating a sentence,in order to achieve the equivalence between English and Chinese, the translator often adjusts the order of sentence structure to make it more in line with the Chinese way of expression. When translating a text, the translator strives to achieve equivalence of meaning to make the text more faithful and understandable. In the process of translation,Huang Zhonglian’s translation variation method provides effective guidance and help for the analysis and adjustment of sentence order structure. |
