Under the background of globalization,it is important for students to cultivate their intercultural awareness and develop intercultural communication competence so that they can communicate with people from different cultures.The New English Curriculum Standards for senior high school requires the combination of the cultural instruction and language teaching during the language acquisition to develop students’ cultural awareness and the communicative competence.But for a long time,teachers attach great importance to the teaching of linguistics knowledge and competence,while the culture teaching is neglected.Some middle school teachers aren’t sensitive to this phenomenon.In view of this,the researcher tries to carry out an empirical study on how to cultivate students’ intercultural communication awareness and ability through classroom teaching so that students can acquire the ability to use the foreign language in a comprehensive way.There are two questions that will be answered:1.What is the present situation of cultivating senior high school students’ intercultural communication awareness and ability in the English classroom teaching?2.How can students’ intercultural communication awareness and ability be cultivated through effective classroom teaching and learning?The research involves students and teachers from Lv Shuxiang Middle School in Zhenjiang,Juangsu Province,totally 11 teachers and 84 students in Senior one.Three-fold study design: questionnaires,tests and a classroom experiment.The findings of questionnaires show that while English teachers and students have realized the significance of the culture teaching,they didn’t pay adequate attention on it.The time and efforts put on cultivating students’ intercultural communication awareness and competence are not enough.The analysis of the tests and teaching procedure shows that culture teaching has a positive influence on the cultivation of students’ intercultural communication awareness and competence as well as the all-round English language competence.The combination of the classroom teaching activities and the students’ research-oriented self-learning activities is a good method to cultivate students’ intercultural communication awareness and competence.
