Research On National Consciousness In The " Free Talk" Column In Shenbao:1932-1935

The "Free Talk",a supplement of “Shenbao”,which includes the characteristics of journalism and literature,is one of the famous supplements in the history of modern Chinese newspapers.From December 1,1932 to October 31,1935,while Li Liewen(Zhang Zisheng)was the editor-in-chief of the "Free Talk",it was noted for publishing essays to advocating freedom of speech and guiding public opinion.In the current study most researchers analyzed the "Free Talk" from the perspective of literature and news communication.However,there is nobody researched the "Free Talk" from the national perspective and as a literary supplement,how it interpreted national consciousness under the national crisis remains unclear.Li Liewen took over as editor-in-chief of the "Free Talk" after the Mukden Incident which caused the national contradiction between China and Japan to become the principal contradiction in Chinese society.In addition,the following "1.28" incident made the development of the Chinese national bourgeoisie and its national industry and commerce containing "Shenbao" more frustrated.On the other hand,the nationalist government leaded by Chiang kai-shek resisted the Japanese invasion passively once and once again,which made the national calamity get deeper and the national crisis get worse,which awakened the national consciousness of the national bourgeoisie and the masses of the Chinese people to salvage China from subjugation.In this regard,"Shenbao",as a newspaper,can publicize and guide public opinion.After the Mukden Incident,it continuously reported on the awakening of the Chinese people’s national consciousness.and also continuously published articles reflecting social realities,focusing on current events,and followed the "Shenbao" commentary,which allowed national consciousness to activate quickly.In view of this,the author of this article analyses the "Free Talk" when Li Liewen(Zhang Zisheng)was the editor in chief from the perspective of national consciousness.A lot of articles published in the "Free Talk" from December 1,1932 to October 31,1935 and related historic literature were studied.The author identified the national consciousness in the "Free Talk" from December 1,1932 to October 31,and generalizes the characteristic of the national consciousness.The reasons for the existence and development of national consciousness,as well as the significance of the reform of the "Free Talk" and the spread of the "Free Talk" to national consciousness at that time as a media supplement were analysed.The other way round,the author analysed the media’s reconstruction of national consciousness which was a personal and social cognitive psychology through the study of national consciousness in the "Free Talk".And it was referred to how the media under the current global consciousness plays role in building the consciousness of Chinese nation community on the aspects of both theory and practice.
