| While working as a volunteer at Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific in Fiji,the author found that there is an obvious need for learning Chinese characters in Fijian students.The author analyzes the characteristics and problems of Fijian students in learning Chinese characters by conducting the student questionnaire survey,the teacher interview,and data research on Chinese character errors in the social course of Suva headquarter of Confucius Institute at the USP,and puts forward corresponding teaching suggestion based on this.By conducting a Fijian Chinese character teaching experiment based on Pinyin input method,the author hopes to find a more efficient Chinese character teaching method for Fijian Chinese students.This thesis initially begins with the introduction of Chinese and Chinese character teaching in Fiji,and then analyzes the students’ questionnaire survey from the perspectives of students’ personal information,their attitudes to learning Chinese,the attitudes and difficulties in their learning Chinese characters,the actual situation of character learning,students’ learning methodology along with their suggestion.Thirdly the teachers’ interview is studied from the points of teachers’ personal information,teachers’ attitudes to teaching characters,their knowledge background,the actual situation of character teaching as well as their corresponding suggestion.After that,the author studies the overall 345 writing data by categorizing them to stroke,radical and the whole word,and then detailedly analyzes these errors to find out the characteristics of students’ writing problems.Moreover,the data from the teaching research based on Pinyin input method for Fijian Chinese is collected and investigated from the points of reading error and writing error to find out this teaching method’s feasibility and weaknesses.Eventually,the author combines the students’ questionnaire survey,the teachers’ interview as well as the error data collection to conduct a reason analysis and further offer the teaching suggestion from the standpoints of CI,students and teachers.Although Fiji is an underdeveloped area of Chinese language teaching,years of efforts by Fiji’s Chinese schools and Confucius Institute at the University of the South Pacific have made Chinese teaching take root and develop in Fiji.However,at present,no one in the academic circle has systematically studied Fiji’s Chinese character teaching.The author hopes that through this more comprehensive investigation of Chinese character teaching in Fiji,it will provide some reference and ideas for Fiji’s Chinese character teaching and provide references and help for Chinese teachers in the future. |
