A Report On The Translation Of The Texts Of Medical Apparatus And Instruments

With the economic integration and the acceleration of globalization,economic ties among countries have been strengthened,especially in medical field.It is manifested in many aspects,such as the frequent exchange of worldwide scientists and doctors on medical issues.Consequently,the translation on medical English emerges at the right moment.Although many books have introduced how to translate medical English,it is still hard for translators to accomplish high-quality medical English translation.Medical English is an important branch of English for science and technology(EST),and has similar characteristics with EST.As inherent general English words account for a great part in medical English and translating polysemy is still difficult for translators,special translation methods are needed.Therefore,this report analyses some translation texts in medical English based on cognitive prototype category theory to discuss the method of medical English translation.The source materials of the report are texts of medical apparatus and instruments from an experienced freelance interpreter.Most of these materials are medical device specification in English.Based on the practice of translation and the Chinese translation,the author analyzes how to translate polysemy of inherent general English words in medical English under the guidance of cognitive prototype category theory.This paper proposes three translation methods for medical English based on the analysis of translation practice,hoping to provide references for translators who will study and translate medical English texts in the future.This report consists four chapters: the first chapter is the introduction of this translation materials and the background and feature of the translation task;the second chapter is the description of the translation process,including the whole process in translation and quality control;the third chapter is the case study.The author lists some representative examples to demonstrate methods of wordtranslation in medical English.And the fourth chapter reaches a conclusion,analyzing some useful translation skills for translation in future translation.
