The academic translation is one of the important preparatory tools for international academic exchanges.By translating the academic achievements from all over the world,academic translation helps scholars to learn the most cutting-edge theoretical knowledge worldwide and enrich their theoretical researches.However,the traits of academic texts pose great challenges to translators for the content is complicated and the style is rigorous.To improve the quality of academic translation,we should systematically reflect on the theories that instructing its process.Based on the translation of Intercultural Education in the European Context: Theories,Experiences,Challenges,this practice report explores the significance and feasibility of translation shift theory in academic translation.Co-edited by Marco Catarci and Massimiliano Fiorucci,this book provides a fundamental framework for the study of intercultural education in Europe.The book conducts a comparative analysis of intercultural theories and practice in Europe,brings together the experiences and lessons in eight European countries and the continent as a whole.This collection has typical academic language features: abstract and intricate content,objective and succinct writing style,a large scale of information and the frequent usage of nominalization,which puts forward strict requirements for the translator.In translating the first three chapters,the writer applies the four principles in academic translation as the guideline and translation shifts theory as the specific approaches to deal with the key and difficult points in the original text.This report summarizes the pragmatic techniques and methods that can be used in academic translation through the analysis of the translation task.In academic translation,translators could shift the grammar of tense with adverbs or auxiliaries of time;shift the passive voice with active voice;shift the postpositive attributives with prepositive attributives;shift the long clauses with short independent clauses;shift the class or unit of the original text;and select the derivatives or synonyms from the target language system,to solve the problems in academic translation.The practical analyses find that the application of translation shift theory can help translators to reach the principles of context,hard translation,integration and readability that required in academic translation,which has pragmatic significance for academic translation research and practice.
