Reading is an important skill in foreign language learning.The English Curriculum Standard(2017)requires junior high school students to be able to read and understand the simple reading materials,newspapers and magazines for students of grade 7-9,overcome the barriers of new words,and understand the general idea;and be able to use appropriate reading strategies according to the reading purpose and requirements.However,the author conducted a questionnaire survey on the learning situation of English reading for the second year of junior high school and found that the biggest obstacle for students to read lies in the lack of vocabulary and reading skills,and the lack of awareness of cooperative reading.Junior high school is the key stage of English learning,so how to effectively help students improve their reading level has become an urgent problem.The English curriculum standard advocates the learning method of "active participation,willing to explore,exchange and cooperation".Based on this,the author tries to practice group cooperative learning in English reading class.This study mainly adopts the combination of qualitative and quantitative research.First of all,this paper analyzes the theory and literature of cooperative learning.Then,based on the research of famous scholars at home and abroad,six principles of cooperative teaching are extracted,which are "reasonable grouping,interesting,educational,scenario,diverse and scientific evaluation".Combined with Slavin’s cooperative learning method,the specific strategies of cooperative teaching are demonstrated in reading class.Finally,it is an empirical study of the effect of cooperative reading teaching.The author selects two classes in Grade 2 of a middle school in Ji’an city as the experimental class and the controlled class,and conducts a semester-long teaching experiment.The experimental class adopts group cooperative reading teaching,while the control class follows the traditional reading teaching.After the experiment,the empirical data is obtained through reading comprehension test,comprehensive ability test,questionnaire survey,interview and classroom observation.The results are as follows: 1)In the English reading comprehension test,the average score of the students in the experimental class is significantly higher than that in the control class,indicating that cooperative reading teaching can help students improve their reading level.2)In the test of English comprehensive ability,the average score of the experimental class is higher than that of the control class,which shows that cooperative reading teaching can also promote the improvement of students’ English comprehensive ability.3)Through the experience of cooperative learning in reading class,the cooperative skills of experimental class students have been improved.This study deconstructs the reading materials and constructs the cooperative reading mode through the cooperative way.It is helpful for the renewal of reading teaching concept and the improvement of reading level,and it can be used for reference in junior high school English reading teaching.
