According to Relevance Theory, language communication is based on relevance concepts and principles. It argues that relevance depends on contextual effect and processing effort. The relevance will be on the rise due to either increasing contextual effect or declining processing effort.Relevance Theory requests the interpreter to produce target text with large relevance by inferring from the ostension of the speaker. In addition,in order to obtain optimal relevance, the listener should acquire enough contextual effect by less processing effort to understand the target text.In this way,the relevance can be established between the speaker and the listener and is of guiding significance for both interpreting and translation. The author works as a consecutive and escort interpreter in the Training Course on Engineering Machinery Application and Maintenance for Developing Countries,2019organized by Ministry of Commerce of PRC from 16thAug 2019 to 26thSept.Some difficulties exist in this class interpreting because of professional lecturing content, different language level, and insufficient machinery knowledge background.Through recording and corpus analysis, the author adopts the Ostensive-Inferential Model and Optimal Relevance of Relevance Theory and tries to intensify relevance by enhancing the contextual effect or reducing processing effort. In this practice report, solutions are put forward in the chapter of case analysis on the basis of beforehand preparation, optimal relevance, and interpreting techniques;interpreting task assessment and reflection are made;recommendations are introduced by the author from the perspective of knowledge storage, listening ability, language coherence, and conciseness and nonverbal communication, which is significant in interpreting practices. This report summarizes the interpreting practice by adopting Relevance Theory, observational method and, experience summarization in hope of enhancing practice performance and providing a certain reference for student interpreters.
