Translation Study Of Transitional Items In Informative Text

This study,taking the manual report as a case,systematically discusses the translation process and skills of transitional items from English to Chinese under the framework of explicitation and implicitation strategiesThe data analyzed in the present study is a sports handbook report,which is published on the IOC official website on October 23 th,2017.It is featured by the theme of joint strike of competition manipulation and other illegal activities from IOC and INTERPOL.This report is an informative text with accurate and informative expression.From the perspective of vocabulary,it is featured with the specialized vocabulary including nouns and verbs in sports field and lottery industry.In terms of syntax,complex sentences as subject and predicative clause,principal and subordinate clause and the parenthesis,particularly the complex sentences with transitional items are the shining point.Based on the plenary analysis,the present study classifies the transitional items in informative texts into two types: different transitional items and same transitional items.The translation procedure can be generally interpreted into three phases: classification and statistic of transitional items of source text;horizontal comparison of different transitional items and vertical comparison of same transitional items and respective analysis of translation skills and rules.The study has three major findings.Firstly,the principle of transitional items translation varies from informative texts under the explicitation and implicitation strategies.On the whole,it gives the priority to the explicitation translation with the supplement of implicitation translation.The main reason is that informative texts pay more attention to the transmission of fact and objective truth.Translators need to analyze and clarify the relationship between sentences and paragraphs to help readers better understand the original text.Secondly,the explicitation translation of different transitional items tends to be processed in order to present the original text smoothly.The explicitation translation of same transitional item is relatively fixed,which requires translator to change the transitional meaning flexibly according to the context,so as to convey the original intention better.Thirdly,the implicitation translation of different transitional items and same transitional item needs to append new words according to the information conveyed by the context,so as to fully express the original text.The present study explores the translation of transitional items in informative text under the explicitation and implicitation strategies,hence it can be applied in the translation of other complex texts.
