| Based on the theory of thematic progression patterns and the Chinese translation practice of Beyond Pure Reason, this thesis addresses the application of thematic progression patterns in the Chinese translation of academic texts.Thematic progression patterns manifest the framework structure of a text and are one of the crucial means to analyze a text, which is not only helpful to interpret the source text more accurately, but also a significant reference to construct the target text. This thesis briefly introduces the relevant concepts of thematic progression patterns and their classifications and reviews the achievements and existing problems of domestic and foreign scholars in the application of thematic progression patterns.Based on these previous studies, this thesis puts forward three principles for the translation of academic texts: faithfulness, readability, and coherence, and gives corresponding examples to illustrate the importance of following these principles.Under these principles, two translation methods are proposed,i.e.,preserving the thematic progression patterns of the original text and reconstructing the thematic progression patterns of the translated text. Finally,a large number of translation examples are used to illustrate that in the latter case, translation techniques such as adding or reducing theme, exchanging theme and rheme, changing subject theme to topic theme, and synthesizing can be used to make the reconstructed progression patterns conform to the characteristics of Chinese, meanwhile the translation is natural and smooth.By applying thematic progression patterns to the practice of Chinese translation of academic texts,it is found that the thematic progression patterns of the original should be retained as far as possible to maintain the information structure of the original text and not destroy the inherent cohesion and coherence of the original text. However, due to the differences between English and Chinese,it is more likely that the thematic progression patterns of the original have to be abandoned and, consequently, establish a new one in the target text. The theory of thematic progression patterns plays an important role in guiding the translation of academic works.Academic works tend to be highly professional with complex semantic structure.Proficient application of this theory can not only analyze the semantic structure of a text more effectively, but also make the translated text more coherent and logical. Therefore, based on the accurate and complete expression of the original text, the readability and coherence of the translated text are taken into consideration, thus promoting the dissemination and exchange of academic thoughts. |
