| This source text Towards a Pollution-Free Planet was issued on the official website of UNEP(United Nations Environment Programme),which is a text of EST(English for science and technology). It is the long version of background report Towards a Pollution-Free Planet on the third United Nations Environment Assembly. The third chapter of this report is excerpted as the material of translation, which proposed some actionable interventions to deal with pollution. It is found that the text is characterized by its frequent use of nominalization containing a large amount of information, which becomes a difficult point in the process of translation. Therefore, this study analyzes the translation of nominalization with practical cases in the source text.In order to ensure the effective transmission of the original information in target text,Nida’s functional equivalence theory is chosen as a guide in the process of translation.Meanwhile, the systematic integration and summary of the previous studies on nominalization and its translation at home and abroad have been conducted. Then,on the basis of nominalization classification proposed by Wang Lifei and Liu Yingjie, the nominalization in source text is divided into two categories as nominalization at lexical level and nominalization at syntactic level. The former includes the nominalization of verbs and the nominalization of adjectives, and the latter includes the nominalization of V-ing structure and the nominalization of clause. Finally,in order to realize the functional equivalence between the target and the original text, the corresponding translation techniques are put forward for different classification of nominalization.Techniques of keeping the original form, conversion to other parts of speech, omission and amplification are put forward to the translation of lexical nominalzation, while techniques of conversion to verb-object structure, division and inversion are to syntactic nominalization. It is hoped that this thesis will provide some reference for the translation and study of nominalization in EST texts. |
