A Study On C-E SI Strategies Of The NDRC Press Conference From The Perspective Of The Effort Model

In recent years,China contacts with foreign countries more frequently,so simultaneous interpreting(SI)is adopted more widely.Therefore,it is necessary to adopt appropriate strategies for completing the task of SI.The author chooses the press conference held by NDRC on October 21,2017 as research material,taking Gile’s Effort Model as a guiding theory,and from three aspects of comprehension,short-term memory and production to analyze the obstacles encountered by the interpreters.Obstacles to comprehension include dense digital information and unfamiliar terminologies;obstacles to short-term memory include high-rate of delivery and high-density of information;and obstacles to production include expressions with Chinese features and syntactic differences between Chinese and English.Meanwhile,the author summarizes the strategies from three aspects: basic strategies,information-increasing strategies and information-decreasing strategies.Basic strategies include: syntactic linearity and waiting;information-increasing strategies include: explicitation and addition;and information-decreasing strategies include: omission,simplification,abstracting,transformation,and approximation.The main research methods are observation and comparison.There are some limitations.For example,the author can not get feedback from the interpreters,the support of a large-scale corpus,or advanced instruments and equipment.The author hopes that more research methods and advanced instruments and equipment can be used in analyzing interpreting strategies.
