In recent years,with the deepening of education reform in China,quality-oriented education emphasizes the cultivation of students’ innovative spirit and practical ability.It thinks that knowledge is of great importance,but thinking can not be restricted by inherent knowledge,thinking should become the basis for students to further understand the world,transform the world,and to develop their ability.The National English Curriculum Standard for Common Senior High School(2017)clearly proposed the core competence of English discipline,which emphasizes the importance of cultivating students’ thinking quality.Besides,the goal of thinking quality in the curriculum demands the students ‘to be equipped with the ability of judging various ideas,expressing their ideas and thinking creatively.’ Therefore,English teachers should change the traditional fragmented,surface teaching method to deeply learning teaching method,achieving the integration of language,culture and thinking.At the same time,reading as one of the comprehensive use of English is not only regarded as an effective way to broaden students’ horizons,but also an important way to absorb rich knowledge.However,based on the barriers of examination-oriented education,traditional teachers paid too much attention to the analysis of words,phrases,sentences and grammar in the process of reading teaching,and lack of the guidance for students to think actively,which leads to students becoming passive recipients,and generally more and more students show resistance to English reading.As a preparatory stage for students to enter the society,the cultivation of students’ critical reading ability is particularly of great essence.Therefore,training students with English reading skills and helping them form good reading habits in senior high school English reading teaching class is an indispensable chain.Based on the relevant theories abroad and at home,this paper adopts the empirical research method and combines students’ pre-test and post-test achievement samples to study the application of critical reading strategies in senior high school English reading teaching,and in purpose of exploring the following three questions: 1)What is the present situation of senior high school students’ English reading ability in Xining No.2 Middle School? 2)How does the teacher teach English reading based on critical reading strategies? 3)What effects does critical reading strategies have on the senior high school students’ English reading performance?Based on the above questions,this study regards 71 students from class 2(41boys and 30 girls)and 72 students(40 boys and 32 girls)from class 8 of senior 3 in Xining NO.2 Middle School as the subjects.Firstly,a questionnaire is used to have an overall understanding of the current situation of the English reading and the using of critical reading strategies of the students in two classes of senior 3.Secondly,byimplementing different teaching methods in experimental class and controlled class,collecting and analyzing the results of reading test papers,checking the overall English reading level of senior 3 students and exploring that whether they have changes in English reading performance after applying critical reading teaching method.Finally,the interview for students is used to analyze whether critical reading teaching can improve senior high school students’ critical reading ability and their awareness of adopting critical reading strategies,and to further explore the feasible countermeasures to popularize its application through more experiments.Through the four-month experiment study and based on the analysis of SPSS,this study shows that the using of critical reading strategies has a positive impact on English reading of senior high school students.The application of critical reading strategies in the process of English reading can help students to improve their reading ability in inference,analysis and so on,at the same time,students’ attitude towards English reading has also improved,as well as their logical thing has improved.For teachers,critical reading teaching helped changing teachers’ traditional teaching method,promoting the communication between students and teachers,and paying more attention to emphasize student-center,which made the class more active and flexible.
