| As one of the most prominent New Generation film director of Hong Kong,Pang Ho-Cheung has had considerable success in box office both in Hong Kong and China’s mainland,as well as being one of critics’ favourites with his auteur characteristics of pastiche, black humor and vulgar aesthetics. He has won Best New Director,Best Screenplay and has been nominated several times for Best Director at the Hong Kong Film Awards. With a high IQ,an observant mind, diligent writing experience, and endurance for hardship,Pang entered film business at an early age,but he has neither spoiled this opportunity, nor has he got lost in the wave of coproducing with mainland Chinese companies.Instead,he has maintained his creative marks with original ideas, and exhibits the creative transmutation as an auteur. This dissertation is divided into four chapters.Chapter One places Pang as the auteur among Hong Kong’s New Generation film directors and then summarizes his auteur characteristics.Chapter Two explores the change of theme in Pang’s films by distinguishing the characters’ attitude toward the trouble they face, that is to first nostalgize the old Hong Kong by avoiding it,then to reflect on the relationship between the two sexes by facing it,and finally to adopt the family value by compromising with it.Chapter Three explores the change of the characters with the representation of Hong Kong men,Hong Kong women and mainland Chinese.Chapter Four explores the audiovisual change in Pang’s films in accordance with that of their themes.Domestic Pang Ho-Cheung-related studies have been mainly focused on a certain aspect of his creative characteristics and lacks an overall analysis of the creative change in his films along the years. This dissertation aims humbly to reach an overall conclusion of the creative transmutation of Pang’s films through a total retrospect. |
