| The current study distinguishes the phonology at the radical level from the phonology at the character level.Using the boundary paradigm of the eye movement technique to study the phonology extraction process of sentence reading in third and fifth grade children.A mixed experimental design of 2(grade 3 vs.grade 5)×4(regular vs.irregular vs.homophone vs.unrelated control)was adopted. The key characters are single-characters(青),preview characters are regular phonograms(清),irregular phonograms(猜),homophones(轻)and unrelated control conditions(洋).The preview benefit of radical level phonology was obtained by comparing regular and irregular characters, while the preview benefit of character level phonology was obtained by comparing visually dissimilar homophone phonograms with unrelated control conditions, and orthographic information was obtained by comparing irregular phonograms with unrelated control conditions. The results of this study found that in the third grade children, the activation of phonology appeared in the gaze duration and the regression path duration reflecting the early and late processing stages. However, there was no preview effect at the radical level and character level in the initial stage such as first fixation duration. In fifth grade children, the activation of character level phonology has a tendency to advance, which is reflected in the initial stage such as first fixation duration. The current study showed that all children in grades three and five have early activation of radical level phonology. However, children in fifth grade activate phonology information at the character level earlier than children in third grade, which can appear in the initial stage in sentence reading. The current results provide evidence for the multilevel interaction activation model in Chinese reading. |
