| This is a report on English-Chinese translation. The source text is the excerpts from the book The Emergency Teacher which was published in 2007,whose author is Christina Asquith,a former journalist of The Philadelphia Inquirer. There are 10.000 English words of source text in total including the Foreword,Introduction and the Chapter One,which is the base of the translation report. The report aims to discuss the instructive meaning exerted by Vermeer’s Skopos Theory on autobiographical literature translation. In terms of the reason why the translator chooses the Foreword,Introduction and the Chapter One to be the source text mainly includes following aspects. The Foreword is written by another friend of the author who describes the whole motivation and the author’s experience from a quite objective perspective. So it is meaningful to translate this part because an objective expression can really show the importance of the book. The Introduction and the Chapter One exactly present the writing style of the author which can be summarized as plain but critical. The difficulty in translating the two parts includes that the language in the ST is usually applied by journalists,so it may be professional for people, including narrative technique, news reporting angle and personal writing style.Applying Vermeer’s Skopos Theory can help translators to analyze readers’ reading psychology and to adjust translating angle to get a better version of translation. |
