A Report On The Translation Of The Tea Girl Of Humming Bird Lane(Excerpts)

This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the first part of the novel The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane,written by American writer Lisa See and published in 2017.This book mainly tells a story about the life experience of an Aka girl of Hani in Yunnan,China from 1988 to 2016.The book has a large number of descriptions of Aka culture and customs,with plain language but delicate and vivid characterization.Guided by Nida’s functional equivalence theory,the translator chooses different translation methods to deal with the five major translation difficulties encountered in the process of translation,namely,the processing of static words,translation of culture-loaded words,translation of long and difficult sentences,translation of characters’ utterance and transformation of rhetorical devices.The translation methods adopted in the process of translation are mainly conversion,back translation,division,inversion,sequential plus addition,etc.And the guiding principle of translation applied in translating the book is to achieve functional equivalence between the source text and the target text.The translation practice will help to raise more attention on Chinese-American literature for the circle of Chinese literature,enable more people to better understand the thoughts expressed in Chinese-American literature,and also provide inspirations for the Chinese people to tell Chinese stories well and for Chinese culture to go outside.
