The Influence Of Perceptual Organizations On Temporal Order Perception

Time perception refers to the perception of the continuity and order of objective things.It is one of the hot issues in the field of time psychology research.Time series perception is the result of the interaction of multiple stages such as early perception processing and later decision processing.At present,the research on the influencing factors of time series perception mainly includes bottom-up and top-down processing directions.Perceptual organization is an important factor affecting time series perception.Studies using time series judgment tasks have shown that perceptual organization has a detrimental effect on time series.Moreover,some ERP research have shown that the impact of perceptual organization on timing perception may occur in the early stages of information processing,and tends to affect timing perception in a bottom-up manner.But attention is also an important factor affecting time.Selective attention can affect time perception through bottom-up external attention or top-down endogenous attention.Is the influence of perceptual organization on time perception regulated by attention factors? Most of the previous research methods used timing judgment tasks and simultaneity judgment tasks that may cause response deviations or effect differences.This study uses three response tasks that can rule out the effects of reaction bias,and explore the moderating effects of endogenous attention and exogenous attention on the effect of perceptual organization on temporal perception.This study consists of two experiments.Experiment 1 explores the moderating effects of endogenous attention on perceptual organization’s influence on timing perception,using two "C" shaped letters as experimental material,the experimental design is 2(organization conditions: perceptual organization,non-perceptual organization)× 2(endogenous attention conditions: attention,non-attention)× 9(SOA: 0 ms,± 15 ms,± 30 ms,± 45 ms,± 90 ms).Experiment 2 explored the moderating role of external attention in the influence of perceptual organization on time series perception.The materials,experimental design and dependent variables used were the same as those in experiment 1.The dependent variables are the response accuracy rate and the judgment frequency.The study obtained the following results and conclusion:(1)Perceptual organization affects time series perception: Under the condition of perceptual organization,the accuracy rate is significantly lower than that of non-perceptual organization,and the judgment frequency is significantly higher than that of non-perceptual organization.Regardless of whether two stimuli appear at the same time,perceptual organization has a detrimental effect on sequential timing judgment;when two stimuli appear at the same time,the perceptual organization promotes the simultaneous chronological perception;when two stimuli do not appear at the same time,the perceptual organization Simultaneous timing perception has a detrimental effect.(2)The regulation effect of endogenous attention in perceptual organization’s influence on chronological perception is significant: under effective clue conditions,the correct rate of chronological judgment of perceptual organization conditions is significantly lower than non-perceptual conditions,and the judgment frequency is significantly higher than non-perceptual conditions;effective clue conditions The accuracy of timing judgment and the frequency of non-simultaneous judgment are significantly higher than the invalid clue condition.Under the endogenous attention,perceptual organization still has a significant influence on timing perception,and the timing judgment under effective clues is significantly better than invalid clues.(3)The adjustment effect of exogenous attention in perceptual organization’s influence on time series perception is significant: under the condition of effective cues,the edge of the accuracy rate of perceptual organization conditions is significantly lower than that of non-perceptual conditions,and the edge of judgment frequency is significantly higher than that of non-perceptual conditions;The accuracy of timing judgment and the frequency of non-simultaneous judgment are significantly higher than the invalid clue condition.Under the exogenous attention,the influence is significantly reduced,and the effective clues is significantly better than invalid clues.
