This paper is an English-Chinese translation report. The original text contains two famous speeches on art and philosophy of William Morris,a famous poet, thinker, decorative artist and active romantic novelist in the Victorian era.The first speech is The Art of the People, and the second one is The Beauty of Life. Both speeches illustrate Morris’ s appreciation of the creativity of working people and his abhorrence of capitalist labor production,as well as his view that the highest state of art is simplicity and purity.William Morris was the founder of the modern design movement, the leader of the arts and crafts movement, and an active promoter of the British socialist movement. The diversity and richness of Morris’ s achievements give his works more value for research and translation. The main theoretical basis of this translation report is the Polysystem Theory, which is put forward by the Israeli cultural scientist Itamar Even-Zohar in the 1970 s.On this basis, the report explores how to translate texts of certain ages and how to choose translation strategies. The Polysystem Theory combines the social, cultural and political context in which the translation and text are located. It regards them all as a system of which the elements are interdependent, overlapping and intersecting and operate as a whole. This theory is helpful to solve the cultural heterogeneity and its complex relationship network. The main content of this report is divided into five sections, the first section is the description of the translation project, the second section is the translation process;the second part is the translation of the report, the third section is the theoretical framework, the fourth section is case studies that present the specific analysis of the problems and solutions encountered in translation;the fifth section is the translator’s summary of translation problems and the understanding of translation work. The appendix contains two original speeches and the Chinese translation of the translator.
