The terminology of "traditional Chinese painting" is a traditional art form in China which originates in the Han Dynasty. Its main characteristic is the art form of painting and mounting on paper, silk and other materials with a brush dipped in water or ink.Chinese painting can be divided into landscape, flowers and birds, figures in terms of subject matter, traditional Chinese realistic painting and freehand brushwork in terms of techniques. However, there are different ways to achieve the same goal in terms of creation and performance techniques. As early as Xie He’s "six methods theory" of the Southern Qi Dynasty,he proposed that the highest standard for appreciating Chinese painting is lively spirit and charm.Zhang Yanyuan of the Tang Dynasty also proposed the principles to be followed in creating Chinese painting: the image must be similar in shape, and the shape must be vivid, charm and shape are all based on the intention and come back to the pen.Zhang Qiyi is a representative figure of the combination of modern flower and bird painting. His flower and bird paintings are beautiful and refined with accurate image. The paintings move from freehand brushwork to fine brushwork, and then from fine brushwork to part-time work with writing with romantic charm of both of them.In the field of modern Chinese flower and bird painting,Zhang Qiyi stands out from others with his nimble strokes and vivid images, with a far-reaching influence on later painters engaged in flower and bird painting. The freehand brushwork in Zhang Qiyi’s traditional Chinese realistic painting explored in this paper mainly refers to two aspects: one is the freehand brushwork of the painting language from the aspects of painting materials and techniques;the other is the freehand brushwork of the creation thought based on profound cultural accomplishment. This paper is divided into three chapters: the first chapter is mainly about the expression of freehand brushwork in Chinese painting;the second chapter is the introduction of Zhang Qiyi, including his life and the characteristics of his works as well as the influence of his flower and bird painting;the third chapter is an important chapter of this paper, specifically analyzingthe freehand spirit of Zhang Qiyi’s flower and bird painting from the painting language, creation consciousness and the connection between his traditional Chinese realistic painting and freehand brushwork painting.
