| This is a translation report on the E-C translation of a popular science text.The original text is excerpted from Handbook to Higher Consciousness written by American writer Ken Keyes.At present,with the fast development of the society,the majority of people are facing increasingly heavy pressure that emerges from various sources.Psychological problems are more common than ever before and gradually become important elements that affect people’s health.Handbook to Higher Consciousness introduces the “Living Love” method and “the secret of happiness” to readers,which may help people live a happy,joyful and loving life by a simple way.For this reason,it seems worthwhile to translate the book to promote its influence.The first seven chapters are taken as the original text in this project,the content of which is mainly about the purpose of writing this book,the secret of happiness,the law of higher consciousness and the twelve pathways to higher consciousness.This critical commentary consists of four parts.Part One is the introduction to the translation project and the significance of the project.Part Two deals with Catford’s translation shifts theory.Part Three illustrates the application of translation shifts theory in this project.Part Four is a conclusion of the report.Since English and Chinese are two distinct languages,translation shifts are needed in E-C translation.According to the features of the original text and the difficult points during the translation process,this project is under the direction of Catford’s translation shifts theory.Catford believes that translation shifts mainly include two types: level shifts and category shifts.Level shifts consist of four levels: lexis,grammar,phonology and graphology.Category shifts contain structure-shifts,class-shifts,unit-shifts and intra-system-shifts.This project aims at discussing the application of Catford’s translation shifts theory in the popular science text.It is hoped that the project could offer a contribution to the translation and research in this field. |
