A Critical Commentary On Selected E-C Translation Of Chapters 1-3 From Developing Cross-cultural Measurement In Social Work Research And Evaluation

The translation project is based on the first three chapters of the book,Developing Cross-Cultural Measurement in Social Work Research and Evaluation,which is a scientific research aiming at providing an overview of issues relevant to the cross-cultural measures and introducing approaches to assess the cross-cultural equivalence of measurement properties.The translation project is under the guidance of Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory targeting at producing the closet natural equivalent in the receptor language.The translation strategies applied to this translation project will be discussed in detail in the commentary.The commentary is divided into five parts.Chapter One is the introduction to the source text.It analyses the difficulties and the significance of the project.Chapter Two is a descriptive process which consists of the process of pre-translating,while-translating and post-translating.Chapter Three focuses on the theoretical framework of the research.This part briefly introduces Eugene Nida and his functional equivalence theory.It also includes the principle of functional equivalence theory.Chapter Four discusses the translation strategies adopted at the lexical level,the syntactical level and the textual level,and the strategies are conversion,liberal translation,omission,amplification,recasting,negation,division and combination.The translator selects some representative examples from the source text,and analyses the translations to show the application of the translation strategies.In Chapter Five,the conclusion and some implications for future search are shared by the translator during the translation process.The translator hopes that the project can arouse interest of the Chinese scholars to the development of cross-cultural measurement,and benefits the perspective translators who undertake the project alike.
