A Report On E-C Translation Of HK Facility Agreement

This is a report on the E-C translation practice of HK Facility Agreement.The source text,about7,000 English words,is taken from the second half of the task entrusted by Shanghai Lawtone Translation Co.,Ltd.The main contents of the selected text are about the definitions which contain lots of legal and financial terminologies and long and complex sentences.The company requires the translation be accurate,complete,fluent in Chinese and clear in organization.This report is divided into six parts: Part One is the translation task description,which introduces the background and significance of the present task;Part Two is the description of the translation process,including how the author had studied parallel texts and got translation aids ready before translating,how the author handled the problems,and how the author reviewed the version;Part Three is an analysis of the characteristics of the original text at the lexical,syntactical and style levels;Part Four is the theoretical basis,which briefly introduces the principles of Functional Equivalence Theory and their guiding significance in translating HK Facility Agreement;Part Five is the case study,relating the concrete solutions to the problems arising during the translation in connection to the above three levels;Part Six summarizes the author’s experience and lessons in the process of translation.In view of the problems encountered in the actual translation of HK Facility Agreement,the author handled them lexically,syntactically and stylistically.At the lexical level,the author adopted the standardization of terminologies,the literal translation of legal pairs,and the liberal translation of polysemous words.At the syntactical level,the author employed division and adjustment in dealing with a long sentence.In addition,a discussion on the conversion between passive voice and active voice was also made.At the stylistic level,the author employed Chinese equivalents for set phrase patterns and amplification for archaic words.With all translation methods and techniques employed,the author was successful in solving the problems encountered in the translation task.
