| This is a report of translating legal judgment Westport Insurance Company v.California Casualty Management Company.One of distinguished language features of the source text is its richness in adjectival modifiers,including adjectival pre-modifiers and adjectival post-modifiers.Disparities between English and Chinese hamper the translation of adjectival modifiers.In legal English,most sentences bear complicated forms and multiple layers of adjectival modifiers,resulting in a more complex sentence logic.The author classifies the different forms of adjectival modifiers and based on researchers’studies on the translation of adjectival modifiers,she adds the translation principle of legal English and applies some translation techniques:prepositioning,integration and division in this report.Coupled with sentences in the source text,these techniques are applied and analyzed,efficiently avoiding the obstacle caused by the differences of English and Chinese as well as raising the translation quality of the target text.Besides,since the source is involved with an insurance case,the terms and jargon of insurance,insurance law as well as judgment are listed.This report provides help to the translation of legal judgment. |
