| This project is based on the English-Chinese mock consecutive interpreting of a trade conference at the 2018 World Bank Annual Meetings under the theme of How Global Trade can Promote Growth for All.The conference gathers together five leading figures to discuss the impact of global trade on countries in the past, the development of international trade at present and trade prospects. The conference consists of an opening remarks section which lasts for five minutes and a Q&A section which lasts for seventy minutes.Based on her speech analysis at the pre-interpreting preparation stage, the interpreter forecasts that the impromptu nature of this task material might give rise to the colloquialisms of speakers such as the incorrect grammar, loose logic and variable speech tempo. These colloquialisms, first and foremost, put pressure on the listening and analysis capacity of the interpreter, and eventually challenge her effort distribution mechanism which coordinates the “mental energy” consumed by note-taking,short-term memory and output. In order to cope with the upcoming difficulties, the interpreter takes the effort model for consecutive interpreting from Daniel Gile as the theoretical basis.By categorizing the difficulties she encountered into four aspects, namely accents, terms, enumerations and syntactic structures, the interpreter analyzes the strategies she adopted including inference, omission, fuzzy interpreting, parrot interpreting,transcoding,note-taking,segmentation and restructuring. The interpreter hopes to identify her own strength and weakness in interpreting through this task and accumulate experience for the real ones in the future. In addition, she wishes that some feasible suggestions would be presented for other interpreters. |
