In the calligraphy history,Wu Ju in the Southern Song Dynasty was rated as the one who inherited the most essence of Mi Fei’s calligraphy among the calligraphers who learned from Mi Fei’s calligraphy,who inherited the calligraphy style of artistic conception advocating in the Northern Song Dynasty,while loved Mi Fei’s calligraphy,so his calligraphy style conform to Mi Fei’s style and ended in Mi Fei’s calligraphy style.Wu Ju’s calligraphy style is praised and criticized by later generations of calligraphers who evaluated that Wu Ju’s calligraphy style was not creative,but the copy of Mi Fei’s style.The era when Wu Ju lived was close to that when Mi Fei lived,so it was hard for Wu Ju to escape from the influence of artistic conception-advocating calligraphy on tracing learning,and failed to understand Mi Fei from the new angle,and finally failed to get rid of Mi Fei’s influence also because that Wu Ju pay too attention to Mi Fei’s calligraphy style.Compared with Wu Ju,Xu Wei changed Mi Fei’s calligraphy style exaggeratedly,with unrestrained and mad handwriting;Wang Duo combined and innovated Mi Fei’s calligraphy so that Wang Duo’s handwriting was bold,unrestrained and uninterrupted;Shen Zengzhi absorbed the nutrition of Mi Fei’s calligraphy,and combine stone inscription with the calligraphy.Although Wu Ju,Xu Wei,et al.all focused on inheritance of the tradition,the latter combined with the times characteristics while rooting in the tradition,which indicates that calligraphy art should combine with special calligraphy idea on the basis of inheritance of the tradition,and should change certainly according to the difference of calligraphy stages,“rebelling” against the ancient boldly,so as to reach the artistic state of general transformation.The thesis is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is about discussion on the source of Wu Ju’s calligraphy style in the aspects of emperor influence of worshiping Zhong Yao and Wang Xizhi,calligraphy background of inheriting artistic conception advocating,as well as learning from Mi Fei’s calligraphy style;the second chapter is to conclude the running script characteristics of frankness,prettiness,charm,steadiness,symmetry,flexibility and well proportion in the aspects of brush using,gesture and layout through analysis on the Wu Ju’s running scrip works;the third and fourth chapter are the core of the thesis,mainly to deeply analyze Wu Ju’s calligraphy idea,hobby in his lifetime,personality,etc.,describing three limitations including Wu Ju who was the first to implement the idea of learning from theancient’s calligraphy,complacent and conservative nature,as well as personality cult,comparing with Xu Wei,et al in learning from the ancient’s calligraphy,so as to obtain three calligraphy revelations including inheritance with innovation,writing with change with time and general transformation under “rebellion”;the fifth chapter is to analyze the author’s reference to and application of the practice of learning from the ancient’s calligraphy from the three angles of technique of writing,structure and art of composition,so as to show the revelation of the study on Wu Ju’s calligraphy style on the author’s practice of learning from the ancient’s calligraphy.
