With the progressing steps of integrations of the world economy and culture, cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries are also becoming more and more frequent. As part of the excellent foreign cultures and the masterpieces of Shakespeare,Hamlet,Othello,King Lear and Macbeth are recognized as the four tragedies and popular with the Chinese reader since being introduced to China. On this basis, there are multiple excellent Chinese translations come into being, and the translations of Zhu Shenghao are the preeminent ones. The stories of the four tragedies are based on the legends and historical stories of Europe, and contain a large number of allusions. The allusions in the four tragedies can be divided into three types, including mythologies and legends, the Bible, historical figures and stories. In addition to the rhetorical function, these allusions play an important role in deepening the theme and unfolding the story and implying the fate of the character, etc.Reception aesthetics focuses on the acceptance of reader and elevates reader to the core status in the relationship triangle among author, literary work and reader. Therefore, based on the horizon of expectations, fusion of horizon and the appealing structure of the text in the theory of reception aesthetics proposed by Jauss and Iser, this thesis aims at exploring reader’s acceptance of the Chinese translations of allusion in the four tragedies by analyzing Zhu Shenghao’s translation. The findings of this thesis can be concluded as follows.(1)Whether the translation of allusion meets the horizons of expectations of the target text readers or not has direct influence on their acceptances.(2)Fusion of horizons is helpful for the target text readers to explore the connotation of translation of allusion.(3)The appealing structure of the text makes contribution to exploring and replenishing the uncertainties of the translation of allusion, and provides the enjoyment of reading for target text readers.
