Nowadays,the flipped classroom is becoming a new wave of education reform at home and abroad,which provides a different way for the development of quality education.In China,in spite of the obvious benefits of the flipped classroom,there are still some existing problems,e.g.little attention paid to LSS,deficient LSS system,making it fail to bring its advantages into full play.Guided by Mastery Learning Theory,this study constructed a PALATE LSS framework applied to College English listening course in the flipped classroom in China by combining the current development and reform requirements of College English instruction.PALATE LSS framework integrates Personnel support,Activity support,Learning strategy support,Affection support,Technology & learning material support,and Evaluation support.In this study,total 28 non-English major freshmen of a certain class in a university in Chongqing were chosen by random sampling as the participants of a10-week research.Through conducting PALATE-based LSS in the College English SPOC-based flipped classroom,four research questions are designed to guide this study:(1)Is there any positive effect on the participants’ academic performance in English listening ?;(2)Is there any positive effect on the participants’ engagement?;(3)How do the students perceive PALATE-based LSS?;(4)How do the instructors perceive PALATE-based LSS? A pre-test and post-test were conducted to measure participants’ language proficiency in English listening before and after the research,classroom observation to examine participants’ engagement,a questionnaire for students’ perception and interviews to investigate instructors’ perception of PALATE-based LSS.The research findings arepresented as follows.Firstly,PALATE-based LSS effectively promoted participants’ language proficiency in English listening.There were significant differences between pre-test and post-test,which reached the significant level on statistics.Secondly,PALATE-based LSSeffectivelyimproved participants’ engagement in the College English flipped classroom.To be specific,the results of classroom observation,the questionnaire and interviews indicated higher engagement in classroom and online activities and interaction between instructors.Thirdly,participants had a goodperception of PALATE-based LSS,esp.in personnel support and affection support.Finally,instructors showed a recognized perception of PALATE-based LSS and mentioned some challenges of LSS.This study enriches the theoretical basis for constructing LSS framework,and proposes a design for the construction and promotion of LSS system in College English listening.In the flipped classroom instruction,PALATE-based LSS can not only promote learning efficiency and comprehensive ability,but also maximize the advantages of the flipped classroom and meet students’ needs of cognitive,emotional and learning strategies.It’s of certain suggestive significance to the promotion of LSS in the SPOC-based flipped classroom in China.
