Identity Construction Of The Topic Celebrities In The Talk Show Roast From The Perspective Of Inter-subjectivity

Identity construction,a hot theme in the field of social science,has also attracted the attention of linguists in recent years.Many scholars have conducted extensive and in-depth research on identity types and constructions from different perspectives such as pragmatics,interpersonal pragmatics,sociolinguistics,psycholinguistics,and discourse analysis,etc.However,there are still some deficiencies in the study about the dynamic identity construction during face-to-face interactions or conversations and little attention has been paid to the identity construction of topic celebrities in program conversation.It is well known that topic celebrities have an extremely noteworthy influence on the words and deeds of the general public so that studies on their identity construction in program discourse is of great significance.In view of this,based on the pragmatic identity theory,the inter-subjectivity theory,and the resonance principles in the dialogic syntax theory,this study seeks to analyze the topic celebrity’s dynamic identity construction via both qualitative and quantitative data that manifest the communicative interaction between the host,guests and topic celebrities in the phenomenal talk show Roast.This study aims to answer the following two questions,namely what kinds of identities are constructed of the topic celebrities in the talk show Roast? How is their identity constructed?By virtue of a framework combined with pragmatic identity theory,the inter-subjectivity theory,and resonance principles,this paper investigates how the identity of topic celebrities is constructed through scenes setting,participants grounding,topic choice,and discourse practices selection in the process of communication and interaction between the host,guests,and topic celebrities.This study discovers that discursive practices concerning identity construction are mainly involved with the choice of vocabulary and phrases,phonetic features and discourse content;the conversation content between the host,guests,and topic celebrities presents a parallel syntactic relation in the aspects of speech and syntactic structure;through the dialogic resonance caused by that relation,the topic celebrity realizes the joint accommodation on the identity construction cognition with the host and guests,so as to achieve the identity cognition coordination and construct the topic celebrity’s identity as an art inheritor,an optimist,a persistent dream-pursuer,a high-quality idol,and a professional performer eventually.
