| The material of this translation report is from the fifth chapter of the monograph Intercultural Knowledge Sharing in MNCs: A Global and Inclusive Approach in the Digital Age,written by Fabrizio Maimone. This book mainly provides an integrated view of the evolution of the research on intercultural knowledge sharing that takes into account the consequences of glocalization, technological innovation and the evolution of organizational strategies and structures.Throughout this book, the translator found that the important and inclusive approaches on intercultural knowledge sharing, the core of this book, are given in the fifth chapter, and this chapter rightly meets the translator’s requirement.Based on a large number of national and international cases and the author’s years of practical experience in knowledge sharing, the selected chapter of this book mainly presents the approaches that trigger and facilitate intercultural knowledge sharing, and offers a model for the growth of organizational knowledge in the digital age.Judging by its contents, the selected material belongs to the non-literary text, featured by professional terms, complex long sentences, and the use of more academic expression. In view of these characteristics of the source text, the translator took Catford’s translation shifts theory asthe main theoretical basis during the process of translation, mainly aiming to analyze the applicability and feasibility of this theory in the study of non-literary academic texts.Catford’s translation shifts theory mainly consists of the level shift and category shifts, and the latter is subdivided into four kinds of shifts.Catford’s theory has a very important guiding significance for the shifts of words, sentences and grammar encountered in the process of translation.A good application of this theory can solve the problems in English-Chinese translation.Based on the translation shifts theory, the translator used the level shift to solve the translation of grammar structure in two languages, and employed the category shifts to solve the translation problems of two languages on lexical and syntactic level respectively. The examples selected from the source text fully demonstrated the application, instructing and rationality of Catford’s translation shifts theory in the English-Chinese translation. |
