A Report On E-C Translation Of The Queen Mother(Chapter Twelve)

“The Belt and Road” has promoted the communication between Chinese and Western cultures,bringing new opportunities for the introduction of culture.As an outstanding cultural achievement of all countries and nations in the world,the Chinese translation of biographies of world famous people can help us to know ourselves and the other better,understand the historical facts and characters,learn from history,and study the value orientation of Western countries.The source text of this translation report is selected from chapter twelve of The Queen Mother,which was written by William Shawcross.In the process of translation preparation,several difficulties had been found: First,a large number of news reports,letters,lyrics and other genres of the 1940s,which were used to mirror historical events,had been quoted in the source text.Due to the lack of background knowledge,it is difficult to appreciate the styles of different genres.Second,in terms of description,the source text is exquisite,words and sentences were well chosen,so the difficulty of conveying literary grace of the source text was also disturbing.In addition,many French words and sentences had been involved in the source text,adding the challenge of understanding and translation.In view of the above three difficulties,Lin Yutang’s translation principle of “Zhong,Shun,Mei(faithfulness,smoothness and aesthetic quality)” has been adopted as the theoretical framework,a large number of historical materials had been verified,parallel texts had been read,and the writing style of the source text had been analyzed.After consulting French professionals for the translation of relevant French words and sentences,the translation had been modified for many times so as to make the translation authentic,rigorous,concise and readable.Here are the findings of this translation report: when translating biography texts,the translation methods such as transliteration,addition and omission are used to deal with the words in sentences,which helps the translation better convey the content.The application of division and combination,voice conversion,word order adjustment,explicitation and implicitation of conjunctions are aimed to deal with complicated sentences,which can make the translation smooth and clear;The use of four-character words and the conversion of part of speech can increase the literariness and readability of the translation.On the premise of “faithfulness” and“smoothness” in translation,the aspect of “aesthetic” should be achieved as much as possible.Limited by the language ability,the capability of realizing the “aesthetic quality” of the translation still needs to be improved.
