English textbooks are the primary learning resources for students in basic education and serve as the carrier for teachers to complete teaching contents and achieve teaching objectives.It is of great significance to choose and adopt textbooks that are suitable for students’ learning abilities and learning levels,which is the fundamental factor contributing to the completion of teaching objectives and improvement of teaching efficiency.However,currently,researches on textbook evaluation have focused on University English textbooks,and there are few pieces of researches on the evaluation of the textbooks English(Yilin edition).So the thesis adopts the analysis and evaluation of textbooks English(Yilin edition)as the research topic and aims to find out the merits and demerits of the textbooks so that we can make some improvement of the textbooks and make textbooks promote teaching better.Based on the previous researches results of textbooks evaluation in China and abroad,and with reference to the English Curriculum Standards(2011),the research uses professor Cheng Xiaotang’s systematic textbooks evaluation of internal and external evaluation as the theoretical basis.The thesis uses quantitative and qualitative research methods.The internal evaluation carries out from five aspects,which include the structure of the textbooks,language knowledge,language skills,material selection,and components of the textbooks.The external evaluation carries out from the six dimensions,which include overall impression,language style,exercise design,material selection,language knowledge,and language skills.This thesis adopts questionnaires and interview and researches of 240 students and 40 teachers from Channan Middle School and Sanli Middle School in Laibin.This thesis mainly concentrates on the following two questions:(1)Do the junior middle school textbooks English(Yilin edition)meet the requirements of the ECS(2011)?(2)What are students’ and teachers’ views on the junior middle school textbooks English(Yilin edition)?The author analyzes the collected data through the SPSS25.0.The research results are these:(1)The textbooks English(Yilin edition)generally meet the requirements of the ECS(2011)in terms of language skills,material selection,structure and components of the textbooks.And the parts of vocabulary,grammar,and topics of language knowledge do not meet the requirements of the ECS(2011).(2)Teachers and students give a high evaluation in terms of the overall impression,language style,and language skills of the textbooks.But the evaluation is medium as a whole in terms of material selection,language knowledge,and exercise design.Furthermore,students and teachers embrace relatively low evaluation of the vocabulary part in terms of language knowledge and grammar exercise and words exercise in terms of exercise design.(3)The textbooks attach great significance to the cultivation of students’ language skills,especially speaking skills.Besides,the topics are closely related to students’ real-life and keeping up with time.In addition,the structure and components of the textbooks are appropriate.(4)The textbooks have some defects: Firstly,the amount of words is larger than the required words in the ECS(2011),and the frequency of some new words is relatively low.The arrangement of the grammatical items is inappropriate,and some intricate grammatical items appear before easy ones,and the frequency of the grammar knowledge is relatively low.Besides,the forms of words exercises are single and mechanical,and the number of words exercises is not enough,and the frequency of words in different units is relatively low.In addition,the forms of grammar exercises are single and mechanical,and there are not enough grammar exercises about the usage of the grammar.The difficulty of the grammar exercises does not conform to the grammar knowledge.Furthermore,there are few grammar exercises about the comparison of grammar knowledge.Lastly,the textbooks do not include the topics which are required by the ECS(2011),such as safety and first aid,hygiene and health.Based on the research results,the thesis puts forward some suggestions for teachers and textbook compilers.For the textbook compilers:(1)It is advised that some words that are not included in the curriculum should be diminished,and supplement some materials to increase the frequency of words.(2)It is advised that grammatical items should be arranged from easy to difficult,and materials should be supplemented to increase the frequency of grammatical items.(3)It is advised that some open and integrated words exercises should be supplemented,and increase the frequency of words in different units.(4)It is advised that some adjustment should be made to the grammar exercise design,and some grammar exercises about grammar usage should be supplemented.For the teachers:(1)It is advised that some grammar exercises which conform to the difficulty of the grammar knowledge should be supplemented.(2)It is suggested that some grammar exercises about the comparison of grammar knowledge should be supplemented and provide students with various grammar exercises.(3)It is advised that teachers supplement some reading materials about the topics of safety and first aid,hygiene and health.In conclusion,the textbooks English(Yilin edition)meet the requirements of ECS(2011)as a whole and obtain students’ and teachers’ relatively good evaluation,and the textbooks are suitable for middle school English teaching.However,the textbooks have some demerits,and it is advised that teachers adopt some strategies to make the textbooks meet the teaching needs.
