Strategies For Translating Philosophically Motivational Quotes In Autobiography From English Into Chinese

The translation studies on motivational quotes can usually be seen inspiring speeches or specialized motivational books,and most of them focus on the analysis under one specific theory.When it comes to the translation studies on autobiographical text,previous scholars mainly pay more attention to the translation strategies of the whole text.By contrast,scarce investigations can be found regarding strategies for translating philosophically motivational quotes in autobiography from English into Chinese.This thesis is based on the translation practice of philosophically motivational quotes of the book My Life on the Road written by Gloria Steinem.The selected book mainly tells a variety of anecdotes the author has encountered during her life-long journey to various places.By comprehensive reviewing the source text,the translator finds that one of the most significant language features,also a big translation problem lies in its philosophically motivational quotes,through which the author aims to share what she learned and experienced in her journey and deliver a message to all of her readers that one should always hold an "on the road" attitude towards life.Based on the analysis of previous studies on this kind of text as well as the special textual features of the chosen book,this thesis summarizes three major translation strategies that can be applied to the translation practice of philosophically motivational quotes in autobiography,namely Writing-purpose Oriented Strategy,Author-style Oriented Strategy and Translation-effect Oriented Strategy.This thesis serves as a reference for translating such text,and it is hoped that translation strategies mentioned in this report can give some fresh insights to future scholars.
