| The British Indian writer V.S.Naipaul,the Nobel Prize winner of literature, pays attention to the "mainstream" and "margin" through his writing.Naipaul possesses unique and profound thinking for identity problems in different spaces because of his complex cultural background and exclusive traveling.Halfa Life(2001)and sequel Magic Seeds(2004)that the author considers to embody his entire literary career are the masterpieces on the theme. Therefore, based on space theory, this thesis analyzes the identity crisis and identity construction of the protagonist, which interprets the arduous process and solution of identity construction of the colonized people and the marginal people. At the same time, the thesis reveals the impact of space transformation on self-identity.This thesis consists of six chapters.Chapter one introduces Naipaul,Halfa Life and Magic Seeds, which is followed by the status and significance of the research and the structure.Chapter two is the theoretical basis.Chapter three analyzes the marginality and rootlessness of the protagonist’s self-identity.The sense of marginality, alienation and rootlessness of the protagonist brought by spatial landscape causes the protagonist’s crisis of identification.Chapter four analyzes the negation and absence of the protagonist’s self-identity.The distorted family, education, marginalized social status and the misplaced marriage cause the dissipation of self-identification and aphasia of the self-identity of the protagonist.Chapter five analyzes the constant exploration and construction of the protagonist’s self-identity.Under the double oppression of physical space and social space, the constant exploration and disillusionment of psychological space make the protagonist realize the hybrid of self-identity and construct self-identity successfully. The last chapter concludes that the interweaving and influence of physical space, social space and psychological space promote the construction of self-identity of the protagonist, emphasizing the importance of space to self-identity construction. The study of the protagonist’s self-identity from the perspective of the spatial theory is beneficial for individuals to cope with the change, orientation, construction of identity under globalization. |
