After the baptism of the vigorous Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s,the United States has taken a solid step towards racial equality. However,American society seems to be calm and peaceful, there are still hidden dangers of racial problems behind it.With the continuous occurrence of incidents in which innocent black people were humiliated or even killed due to unfair police law enforcement, the problem of racial profiling has gradually surfaced and aroused people’s wide concern. It is helpful to deepen our understanding of racial situations in the United States to explore the problem of racial profiling.Although the problem of racial profiling in American society appears in the actual process of police law enforcement,it is rooted in the historical tradition of racism.Whether the black people have been discriminated against since the colonial period,or the Russian Americans and Japanese Americans have suffered from discrimination in the war years, there has always been a trace of racial profiling in American society. The trial result of "Terry’s case" gives the police more discretion. The high proportion of black drivers intercepted by law enforcement officers makes people realize that the problem of racial profiling is serious.American society has made great efforts to rectify racial profiling.First,at the official level, under the president’s appeal and advocacy, successive American governments have tried to reduce the occurrence of racial profiling by strengthening technical monitoring, standardizing police law enforcement, increasing funding and holding hearings.Second,at the unofficial level, human rights organizations, public figures and even ordinary people are also offering advice and going hither and thither to call for the prohibition of racial profiling in their own good and formal ways.People from all walks of life in the United States have made a variety of efforts to change racial profiling, which is worthy of recognition, but the results are not satisfactory. Not only the law enforcement and judicial issues against racial and ethnic minorities are still prominent, but in daily life, racial and ethnic minorities are also suspected for no reason when shopping, traveling, and in community activities.Racial and ethnic minorities are still plagued by discriminatory treatment by law enforcement officers and ordinary white people.Racial and ethnic minorities continue to be discriminated against by law enforcement officers and ordinary white people, and they are deeply troubled. This outcome shows that the United States has not made substantial progress in solving this problem.Besides the deep-rooted racism continuing to raise its ugly head influences people’s thinking, there is no targeted legislation, and racial and ethnic minorities have committed more crimes, which deepens the white people’s worry and suspicion.Such social reality makes it difficult to eradicate racial profiling in American society. The United States still has a long way to go in solving the problem of racial profiling.
