| Under the trend of economic globalization, many scientific and technological exchanges take place between different countries, which gives rise to scientific and technical interpreting.Although scientific and technical interpreting remarkably features specialized terms, nominal structures, various types of compound sentences, etc.,related studies are so insufficient as to hinder the progress of such practices. It is thus necessary that we conduct more researches about scientific and technical interpreting. The author was introduced by a friend to provide English-Chinese consecutive interpreting services for the technical exchange between Hebei Haihang Petrochemical New Materials Co.,Ltd.and the Lummus Company on October 12,2019.The author was responsible for the translation of the technical exchange content between the two sides.Since the topic of this project mainly concerned the technical knowledge of chemical industry,it could be categorized as scientific and technical interpreting.Based on the interpreting practice of this technical exchange meeting, this report describes in detail the whole process of interpreting(including pre-task preparation, interpreting process and post-task reflection),and analyzes the problems that appeared in this practice from the perspective of the Interpretative Theory of Translation. As the first interpretation theory in the world, the Interpretive Theory of Translation is still the most important theoretical reference in the interpretation field. It believes that interpretation is divided into three steps:understanding,de-verbalization,and reformulation. The main argument is that interpretation should be free from the original language form, and the object of translation should be the discourse, namely, the meaning of speech, rather than the words.Through case analysis, the author found that the Interpretive Theory of Translation is instructive for scientific and technical interpreting.Failing to follow properly the Interpretive Theory of Translation will lead to many interpreting problems, such as mistranslation,omission,un-idiomatic reformulation,non-fluent output, semantic inequivalence and so on.Therefore, the author tries to propose corresponding improvement strategies under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory of Translation, including making sufficient cognitive complement, improving listening comprehension, distributing energy reasonably, taking note correctly, taking appropriate pause and using syntactic linearity, etc. In this way,the author hopes to further enrich the theoretical research of scientific and technical interpreting and offer useful experiences for scientific and technical interpreters to improve their interpreting performance. |
