A Report On The E-C Translation Of Construction Process Card For Thermal Power Plant

This paper is an English-Chinese translation report,in which the translation materials are selected from the thermal power station construction process card of Harbin Electric International Engineering co.,LTD.As one of the most important international contractors in the world,this company is one of the key enterprises of China’s exporting and large-scale power generation equipment and the general contracting of power station projects over 20 countries.Welding insulation is a very important phase in the construction of thermal power station.To make sure of his standard operating process,process card plays an important guiding role in thermal power station construction.This set of process card is provided with a large number of tables and illustrations,which not only provide detailed parameters and requirements,but also provide pictures of finished products to facilitate work instruction.As one of the document forms of process specification,Process card,also called "parts card",is widely used in industrial production management.It is compiled in every process stage of every part,such as casting,forging,cold stamping,welding,machining,assembly and so on.Process card materials belong to English for Science&Technology(EST).With the rapid and continuous development of science and technology,the demand for scientific English translation is also increasing consequently.Different from other texts,EST is professional,objective,precise and precise.Therefore,the translation of scientific English emphasizes more on the accuracy of information transmission and the standardization of expression.In the book Theory and Practice of Translation,American translator Eugene Nida had proposed the theory of Functional Equivalence,emphasizing that translators should use appropriate and authentic expression to reproduce the content and essence of the source language and present the information of the source language to readers.Nida’s functional equivalence theory mainly requires the translator to reproduce the information and content of the source text with the closest natural equivalent language,so as to achieve the equivalence in four aspects,that is,lexical,syntactic,textual and stylistic equivalence.Under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence theory and based on a large number of translation examples,this report makes a preliminary study and exploration of the translation skills used in translating process card materials.This report consists of five chapters.The first chapter mainly introduces the background of the translation task,the reasons for selecting the translation materials,the text content of the translation materials and the language features of the process materials.The second chapter mainly describes the pre-translation preparation,duration and quality control of the task.The third chapter expounds Eugene Nida’s theory of functional equivalence,analyzing from four aspects:lexical equivalence,syntactic equivalence,textual equivalence and stylistic equivalence.The fourth chapter is the main part of this paper.The author discusses nominalizations,terminology,long sentences and passive sentences in the translation materials.The last part is the summary,which summarizes the implications,lessons and problems to be solved in the translation process.Through this translation practice,the translator understood the fact that becoming an excellent translator and the master of two languages,requires solid language skills,background knowledge,culture awareness,language expression habit,as well as professional knowledge in other fields.In translation,follow the requirement of "content first,form second" in order to reflect information of the source language.The author hopes this report can provide some reference for the translation of EST materials such as process card.
