Over the course of Western art history, social institutions established by capital accumulation and cultural circumstances marked by androcentrism determine that in the process of production and dissemination of artworks, the content of creation and the criteria for evaluation are derived and established from the male perspective.Whether in the work of art or in the process of creation, women are basically the object of gaze;many female artists are also fettered by limited art space in their creation;in terms of criteria for evaluation of artworks, women are also treated inobjectively and unfairly.Throughout art history, women have created rich and varied works, but they are often considered petty, uncreative and mediocre, and women’s paintings are often evaluated under gender stereotypes.Suzanne Valadon was the first woman painter admitted to the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts.As an artist breaking with tradition, she produced a host of self-portraits expressing women’s self-consciousness through continuous exploration of her personal style, and resisted women’s mental state of being examined by recording the body’s aging process. In her sharp and realistic family portraits,Suzanne Valadon depicted women’s different roles in a genuine and powerful fashion. In her nudity works,Suzanne Valadon observed and represented the image of women in a way different from men did,and even gazed at the nude body of men in a bold, innovative manner.Analyzing artworks from the female perspective through a case study of Susannah Valadon can draw attention to women’s state in art creation, supplement the construction of art history from women’s perspective, and promote the development of women’s art and the formation of an art environment of gender equity.
