A Report On Chinese Translation Of Maslow’s Psychological Work

This translation project is commissioned by Chongqing Yunbin Translation Co.,Ltd and presided over by my supervisor.The original text is The Psychology of Science:A Reconnaissance,one of Abraham H.Maslow’s classic works on Psychology.This book expounds the view that science is a product of the human nature of the scientist and puts forward a complete and systematic humanistic psychology.This translation project will help Chinese readers understand Maslow’s humanistic psychology and promote the domestic research on Maslow’s psychology.The full text of this project has about 48,000 words and the project duration was three months.The reporter was responsible for the translation of Cognitive Needs Under Conditions of Fear and of Courage,Comprehensive Science and Simpleward Science,and Suchness Meaning and Abstractness Meaning,with a total of more than 20,000 Chinese characters.The original work is an academic text with accurate diction,fully developed idea,frequent use of parallel structures and long sentences.According to the quality requirements of this translation project contract,the translated version should be "faithful and accurate in meaning and be expressive,fluent and elegant in style".The report mainly analyzes four typical problems encountered in practice,namely,the professional translation of abstract nouns,the translation of juxtaposed synonyms,the treatment of long sentences with parallel structures and the treatment of long sentences with multiple clauses.For the translation of words,attention is paid to the accuracy of Chinese equivalent;for the translation of long sentences,the full meaning of sense groups is carefully represented so as to make the translation faithful,smooth and highly readable.This practice is helpful to the introduction of Maslow’s works in China and provides reference for the translation of texts of same type.
