This thesis focuses on the translations of names of ceramic relics in the museums from the perspective of cultural presupposition. In this thesis the cultural presupposition in ceramic relic names is analyzed according to Li Kairong’s classification of cultural implications.Contrastive analysis of Chinese and English ceramic names is conducted at different levels of cultural presupposition that those names imply, and attempts are made to summarize the way of disposing cultural presupposition in rendering the names of ceramic relics. The following conclusions are drawn from the analysis:firstly, the emphasis that translators pay attention to differs according to different levels of cultural information.Information of surface level describes the essential feature of ceramic relics, which requires to be transmitted accurately.Cultural information of middle level refers to the appearance, and requires the translator to adjust the information appropriately. As to cultural information of deep level, due to the difference between Chinese and foreign culture, the translator is required to deal with it more flexiblySecondly, methods and strategies adopted have different effect on the transformation of cultural presupposition.Cultural presupposition of the surface level is usually retained;that of the middle level is mostly retained, while some would also be highlighted;as to the presupposition at the deep level,a combination of methods is employed in an attempt to highlight and transfer it.This thesis obtains some findings that verify to a certain extent the feasibility of applying cultural presupposition theory to the translation studies of cultural relic texts, and they are also of some reference value for translators to deal with cultural information in translating.
