| The Cooperative Principle(CP),a pragmatic theory put forward by Grice.effectively guides people’s communication.Interpreting plays an important role in cross-cultural communication,so the CP can also apply to the field of interpreting to ensure more effective and fluent communication.More and more scholars have been studying the application of the CP in interpreting practices, but most of the studies focus on business negotiation interpreting or conference interpreting from the perspective of observance of the CP,and there are few studies involving escort interpreting in sports or from the perspective of violation of the CP.This report analyzes the application of the CP in a basketball training class interpreting practice from two aspects:observance and violation of the CP by presenting specific examples. The findings are summarized as follows:firstly, observance of the CP can faithfully express the speaker’s intentions and ensure the accuracy of interpreting;Secondly interpreters do not always observe the CP in the interpreting practice. In some cases, violating the CP can eliminate the ambiguity, ensure smooth communication, and improve the quality and effectiveness of the interpreting.Thirdly,in some cases, violating the CP can decline the interpreting quality. This report is divided into five chapters:the first chapter is a brief introduction to the CP and the background of the task. The second chapter focuses on the requirements of the task, characteristics of the clients and the preparation before interpreting. The third chapter is about the literature review on the CP and its four conversational maxims, its development both at home and overseas, and the researches on its application in interpreting.Chapter four tells of analysis of typical cases in this interpreting task under the guidance of the CP.The fifth chapter summarizes the report, putting forward findings and making suggestions. |
