On Wai-lim Yip’s Theory Of "Hypermedia Aesthetics" And His Poetry Practice

The research object of this paper "hypermedia aesthetics" is a concept proposed by Wai-lim Yip in his 1977 article Thinking Beyond:The Aesthetics of Media and Hypermedia,which not only emphasizes the performance of the media itself,but also emphasizes the interaction and compatibility of various art media on this basis,so as to open up the aesthetic expression field of modern art creation.From this point of view,this paper systematically reviews the theoretical construction and creative practice of"hypermedia aesthetics" in Wai-lim Yip’s academic career of more than 50 years.The following is the overall framework of this paper:The introduction is divided into three parts.Firstly,it classifies the current research on Wai-lim Yip,especially the cross media experimental research on his works.Secondly,it traces the theoretical source and background of "hypermedia aesthetics"based on his life experience,finally,points out the value and significance of the topic.The text is divided into three chapters,corresponding to the cross-border integration of poetry and image,music and drama:In the aspect of "Poetry-Image",Wai-lim Yip was inspired by the aesthetic vision of Taoist thought and traditional "poetry and painting interlinked".He valued the verve poetry and Nanzong painting represented by Wang Wei,and thought that both of them embodied the Taoist way of "Substance view of things" and the Expressive Strategy of"Li He Yin Sheng".Therefore,in the creation of modern landscape poetry,Wai-lim Yip inherits the aesthetics of Chinese classical landscape poetry and painting,and merges tradition and modernity,pursuing pure visual image and aesthetic characteristics.Moreover,Wai-lim Yip has always maintained close cross media interaction with the art world,often innovating artistic expression techniques in the way of "poetry and painting intertextuality",communicating the aesthetic sense of China and the west,and promoting the cross regional communication of modern art.In the aspect of "Poetry-Music",Wai-lim Yip thinks that the words of poetry,the"sound" and "string" of music are all to show the operation process of "Qi" through a certain organizational way,so the creation of modern poetry can realize the "beating"of "Qi" in poetry by "driving force of music".Therefore,in the process of creating concrete poems,Wai-lim Yip not only pursues the unique visual effect,but also pays attention to the musical aesthetic feeling formed by the arrangement of words,so as to realize the linkage between hearing and vision.At the same time,Wai-lim Yip also actively cooperates with musicians such as Li taixiang to find new aesthetic expression strategies,so as to promote a deeper and broader cross media interaction between poetry and music on the basis of inheriting the past and opening up the future.In the aspect of "Poetry-Drama",Wai-lim Yip was influenced by Pound,Eliot and other western modernist poets in the early stage.He used "static drama" to refer to the aesthetic characteristics of Chinese classical poetry,and emphasized its outstanding imagery and performance.In his poetry creation in this period,he also learned from the exploration experience of "Dramatization of new poetry" in the 1930s and 1940s in Chinese mainland,often using "The promotion of dramatic scene" to eliminate the excessive explainability and analysis of vernacular.In addition,in the 1970s,Wai-lim Yip began to experiment with mixed media in the form of modern poetic drama.Later,because of his yearning for the pure realm of "poetry,music and dance are indistinguishable " in primitive society,he turned to the study of Taoist aesthetics and early folk poetry,and led everyone into nature in poetry teaching,through chanting poetry,meditation poetry,dance poetry,painting poetry,impromptu performance and so on to awaken students’ primitive instinct and reflect on modern daily life.The conclusion tries to find its historical position on the basis of summing up the important value of "hypermedia aesthetics",and taking the later turning of Wai-lim Yip as an example,it briefly describes the enlightenment of "hypermedia aesthetics"for the current mainland’s in full swing cross media experiment,and finally puts forward the shortcomings of this paper and the possibility and value of further extending and expanding the research scope.
